והוה בתר כן ושאיל דוד במימרא דיי למימר האסק בחדא מקרויא דבית יהודה ואמר יי ליה סק ואמר דוד לאן אסק ואמר לחברון:
lkhbrwn wamr asq lan dwd wamr sq lyh yy wamr yhwdh dbyth mqrwya bkhda hasq lmymr dyy bmymra dwd wshayl kn bthr whwh
After this, David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”

וסליק תמן דוד ואף תרתין נשוהי אחינועם דמיזרעאל ואביגיל אתת נבל דמכרמלא:
dmkrmla nbl athth wabygyl dmyzreal akhynwem nshwhy thrthyn wap dwd thmn wslyq
So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

וגברוהי דעמיה אסיק דוד גבר ואנש ביתיה ויתבו בקרוי חברון:
khbrwn bqrwy wythbw bythyh wansh gbr dwd asyq demyh wgbrwhy
David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.

ואתו גברי שבט יהודה ומשחו תמן ית דוד למהוי מלכא על דבית יהודה וחויאו לדוד למימר גברי יבש גלעד דקברו ית שאול:
shawl yth dqbrw gled ybsh gbry lmymr ldwd wkhwyaw yhwdh dbyth el mlka lmhwy dwd yth thmn wmshkhw yhwdh shbT gbry wathw
The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

ושלח דוד אזגדין לות אנשי יבש גלעד ואמר להון בריכין אתון קדם יי דעבדתון חסדא הדין עם רבונכון עם שאול וקברתון יתיה:
ythyh wqbrthwn shawl em rbwnkwn em hdyn khsda debdthwn yy qdm athwn brykyn lhwn wamr gled ybsh anshy lwth azgdyn dwd wshlkh
David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

וכען יעבד יי עמכון טיבו וקשוט ואף אנא אעביד עמכון טבתא הדא דעבדתון פתגמא הדין:
hdyn pthgma debdthwn hda Tbtha emkwn aebyd ana wap wqshwT Tybw emkwn yy yebd wken
Now may Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.

וכען יתקפן ידיכון והוו לגברין גברין ארי מית רבונכון שאול ואף יתי משחו דבית יהודה למהוי מלכא עליהון:
elyhwn mlka lmhwy yhwdh dbyth mshkhw ythy wap shawl rbwnkwn myth ary gbryn lgbryn whww ydykwn ythqpn wken
Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

ואבנר בר נר רב חילא די לשאול דבר ית איש בושת בר שאול ואעביריה למחנים:
lmkhnym waebyryh shawl br bwshth aysh yth dbr lshawl dy khyla rb nr br wabnr
Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

ואמלכיה על דבית גלעד ועל דבית אשר ועל דבית יזרעאל ועל דבית אפרים ועל דבית בנימן ועל דבית ישראל כולהון:
kwlhwn yshral dbyth wel bnymn dbyth wel aprym dbyth wel yzreal dbyth wel ashr dbyth wel gled dbyth el wamlkyh
He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

בר ארבעין שנין איש בשת בר שאול כד מלך על ישראל ותרתין שנין מלך ברם דבית יהודה הוו בתר דוד:
dwd bthr hww yhwdh dbyth brm mlk shnyn wthrthyn yshral el mlk kd shawl br bshth aysh shnyn arbeyn br
Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

והוה מניין יומיא דהוה דוד מלכא בחברון על דבית יהודה שבע שנין ושיתא ירחין:
yrkhyn wshytha shnyn shbe yhwdh dbyth el bkhbrwn mlka dwd dhwh ywmya mnyyn whwh
The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

ונפק אבנר בר נר ועבדי איש בושת בר שאול ממחנים לגבעון:
lgbewn mmkhnym shawl br bwshth aysh webdy nr br abnr wnpq
Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

ויואב בר צרויה ועבדי דוד נפקו וערעונון על בריכתא דבגבעון כחדא ושרו אילין על בריכתא מיכא ואילין על בריכתא מיכא:
myka bryktha el waylyn myka bryktha el aylyn wshrw kkhda dbgbewn bryktha el werewnwn npqw dwd webdy tsrwyh br wywab
Joab the son of Zeruiah and David’s servants went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.

ואמר אבנר ליואב יקומון כען עולימיא ויחייכון קדמנא ואמר יואב יקומון:
yqwmwn ywab wamr qdmna wykhyykwn ewlymya ken yqwmwn lywab abnr wamr
Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and compete before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”

וקמו ועברו במנין תרי עסר מדבית בנימן ומדאיש בשת בר שאול ותרי עסר מעבדי דוד:
dwd mebdy esr wthry shawl br bshth wmdaysh bnymn mdbyth esr thry bmnyn webrw wqmw
Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of David’s servants.

ואתקיפו גבר בריש חבריה וחרביה בסטר חבריה ונפלו כחדא וקרא לאתרא ההוא אחסנת קטליא די בגבעון:
bgbewn dy qTlya akhsnth hhwa lathra wqra kkhda wnplw khbryh bsTr wkhrbyh khbryh brysh gbr wathqypw
They each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.

והוה קרבא תקיף עד לחדא ביומא ההוא ואתבר אבנר ואנשי ישראל קדם עבדי דוד:
dwd ebdy qdm yshral wanshy abnr wathbr hhwa bywma lkhda ed thqyp qrba whwh
The battle was very severe that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before David’s servants.

והוו תמן תלתא בני צרויה יואב ואבישי ועשהאל ועשהאל קליל בריגלוהי כחדא מן טביא די בחקלא:
bkhqla dy Tbya mn kkhda bryglwhy qlyl weshhal weshhal wabyshy ywab tsrwyh bny thltha thmn whww
The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.

ורדף עשהאל בתר אבנר ולא איתפני למיזל על ימינא או על סמלא מבתר אבנר:
abnr mbthr smla el aw ymyna el lmyzl aythpny wla abnr bthr eshhal wrdp
Asahel pursued Abner. He didn’t turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.

ואיתפני אבנר בתרוהי ואמר האת דין עשהאל ואמר אנא:
ana wamr eshhal dyn hath wamr bthrwhy abnr waythpny
Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is.”

ואמר ליה אבנר איתפני לך על ימינך או על סמלך ואיחוד לך חד מעולימיא וסב לך ית זרזיה ולא אבה עשהאל למיזר מבתרוהי:
mbthrwhy lmyzr eshhal abh wla zrzyh yth lk wsb mewlymya khd lk waykhwd smlk el aw ymynk el lk aythpny abnr lyh wamr
Abner said to him, “Turn away to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn away from following him.

ואוסיף עוד אבנר למימר לעשהאל זור לך מבתרי למה אקטלינך וארמינך לארעא ואיכדין אזקוף אפי ואיחמי ליואב אחוך:
akhwk lywab waykhmy apy azqwp waykdyn larea warmynk aqTlynk lmh mbthry lk zwr leshhal lmymr abnr ewd wawsyp
Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?”

ולא אבא למיזר ומחהי אבנר באחורי מורניתא בסטר ירכיה ונפקת מורניתא מאחורוהי ונפל תמן ומית באתריה והוה כל דאתי לאתרא דנפל תמן עשהאל ומית וקימין:
wqymyn wmyth eshhal thmn dnpl lathra dathy kl whwh bathryh wmyth thmn wnpl makhwrwhy mwrnytha wnpqth yrkyh bsTr mwrnytha bakhwry abnr wmkhhy lmyzr aba wla
However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

ורדפו יואב ואבישי בתר אבנר ושמשא עלת ואינון מטו עד גבעת אמתא די על אפי גיח אורח מדברא דגבעון:
dgbewn mdbra awrkh gykh apy el dy amtha gbeth ed mTw waynwn elth wshmsha abnr bthr wabyshy ywab wrdpw
But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. The sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

ואתכנישו בני בנימן בתר אבנר והוו לסיעא חד וקמו על ריש רמתא חדא:
khda rmtha rysh el wqmw khd lsyea whww abnr bthr bnymn bny wathknyshw
The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.

וקרא אבנר ליואב ואמר הלאפרש תקטול חרבא הלא ידעתא ארי מרירא תהי בסופא ועד אימתי לא תימר לעמא למתב מבתר אחיהון:
akhyhwn mbthr lmthb lema thymr la aymthy wed bswpa thhy mryra ary ydetha hla khrba thqTwl hlaprsh wamr lywab abnr wqra
Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”

ואמר יואב קים הוא יי ארי אלולפון מלילתא ארי בכין פון מעידן צפרא אסתלק עמא גבר מבתר אחוהי:
akhwhy mbthr gbr ema asthlq tspra meydn pwn bkyn ary mlyltha alwlpwn ary yy hwa qym ywab wamr
Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother.”
28
ותקע יואב בשופרא וקמו כל עמא ולא רדפו עוד בתר ישראל ולא אוסיפו עוד לאגחא קרבא:
qrba lagkha ewd awsypw wla yshral bthr ewd rdpw wla ema kl wqmw bshwpra ywab wthqe
So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still and pursued Israel no more, and they fought no more.
29
ואבנר וגברוהי הליכו במישרא כל ליליא ההוא ועברו ית ירדנא ואזלו כל בתרון ואתו למחנים:
lmkhnym wathw bthrwn kl wazlw yrdna yth webrw hhwa lylya kl bmyshra hlykw wgbrwhy wabnr
Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

ויואב תב מבתר אבנר וכנש ית כל עמא ושגו מעבדי דוד תשעת עסר גברא ועשהאל:
weshhal gbra esr thsheth dwd mebdy wshgw ema kl yth wknsh abnr mbthr thb wywab
Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen men of David’s and Asahel were missing.
31
ועבדי דוד קטלו מדבית בנימין ובגברי אבנר תלת מאה ושתין גברא מיתו:
mythw gbra wshthyn mah thlth abnr wbgbry bnymyn mdbyth qTlw dwd webdy
But David’s servants had struck Benjamin Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.

ונטלו ית עשהאל וקברוהי בקברא דאבוהי די בבית לחם ואזלו כל ליליא יואב וגברוהי ונהר להון בחברון:
bkhbrwn lhwn wnhr wgbrwhy ywab lylya kl wazlw lkhm bbyth dy dabwhy bqbra wqbrwhy eshhal yth wnTlw
They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
